What Tom Wants To Tell You

One-on-one instruction is the norm in my classes.  I provide instruction to individuals and very small groups (normally up to 4) in various mediums shown below.  I prefer small class sizes so you receive only the best art instruction.  I do not teach from the front of a room.  It doesn’t matter if you are left- or right-handed since I can teach both.  I customize classes to fit your requests as much as possible.    I do teach those under age 18, as long as an adult is present.  Classes are always family friendly.

My goal as an instructor is to make classes stress-free and enjoyable.  My goal for you as a student is to learn or expand your abilities, develop your own style, grow as a result from what you learn in class, and to make memories for yourself and others through your art work.

You will leave class with a completed piece of your own work—unless indicated.

General Information and Answers to Questions are further below.

Syllabus and Fees are also provided within this document. Classes may have hourly instruction fees OR have costs based on what is to be accomplished within one session.

General Information

and Answers to Questions

What do students paint in Tom’s classes? You, the student, choose what to paint according to your interests (floral, water, mountains, etc) and choose the medium in advance when scheduling the class.  For example, if you want to paint an oil or watercolor and don’t have an idea, I’ll ask you to browse my website for general ideas.  If you want to paint a Bob Ross painting, I’ll ask if you want to do a landscape, wooded, water scene or floral, and we’ll go from there.  You can use the Bob Ross website, a Bob Ross book, or view the Bob Ross paintings at my website to decide what you would like to paint.  Groups are a little different since normally only one scene can be accomplished by all–but as much as possible I try to customize to what the student(s)’ interests are.

How much does it cost: See the SYLLABUS & FEES section further below.  Costs are dependent on the type and length of the class you choose.  If you have special needs, such as a disability, let me know so I can make adjustments to class lengths if needed or requested.

Where are classes taught? Classes are often taught in my studio in Beavercreek Ohio.  Small group classes can be taught at the Fairborn Art Association (Fairborn OH) or at another convenient location.  At times, classes for individuals or groups may be taught at a local attraction such as an arboretum or museum, based on progress or request of student.  These classes are taught by setting up at the attraction, near the scene to be sketched or painted.  Drawing or painting at an actual location is a unique experience for many students. Photography instruction is almost always provided in an outdoor setting.

When are classes taught? Classes are scheduled at a convenient time for the individual student or group of students.   Instruction schedule may also be pre-determined for group sessions, workshops, and seminars.

How are classes paid for? Classes are normally paid for upon arrival, unless an hourly instruction rate applies.  If an hourly rate applies, student will pay at conclusion of the session.  Payment is made in cash at time of class OR in advance with credit card on Paypal (sorry, Tom does not accept checks through Paypal for classes because there is often not enough time for the payment to clear Paypal/the bank before class).  Established students who have taken recurring classes may pay by check AT CLASS if Tom agrees in advance.

What should the student bring? Students should review the information for the specific class they want to take (See Syllabus & Fees further below).  Student should also check with Tom when scheduling or before the class to confirm if they are required to bring any supplies—especially if a class is adjusted to meet special requests.  Photography students do not have to bring a camera, but may if they want to take photos.  Note that Tom’s instruction does not provide information on how to use a camera, but rather the techniques for taking the photos.

Customized “collections” for students .  This is when you (the student) and I design a customized course of instruction and set fees in advance.  Material fees (if applicable) are paid in advance, and instruction fees are paid at time of instruction.  An example of a “collection” is:  you like scenery and would like to learn different mediums:  I can instruct you on 2 watercolors, 2 acrylics, and 2 oils, all scenery pieces.  You walk away with a painting that you did yourself after each session.

Have a special event or birthday and not sure what to do? Consider a painting demonstration.  I can paint and narrate a 1-2 hour event for you and your attendees.  They can watch and learn techniques as I share my life as an artist and interact with the group.  I like to help people make memories, and this is a unique, fun way to do something different.   Costs vary.

If you don’t see what you are looking for or would like to have a painting seminar in/near your home/area, please contact me by phone (937) 371-1489 or email: TomHockArtistOhio@gmail.com

Painting Hints: I have provided hints on painting at various images in my website.  To view, go to the left side of the site and select the category “Find Painting Hints from Tom.”

—————————————————

1)  Art Classes – Syllabus and Fees:

Students under age 18 must be accompanied by adult during entire session.  If student has special needs, I can work with student/caregiver in advance to determine best approach to teaching environment and length of class. Instruction can often be adjusted for individual circumstances.

Basic Drawing

Description: The student learns basic techniques and concepts to give a foundation in drawing. Students with some or no drawing skills are the most likely to benefit from a beginner’s course of instruction.  Artists who use other mediums who have never learned drawing or sketching will also benefit.

Paper:  Add $5 per session if drawing paper provided by Tom

$0 if student provides paper/drawing book (must be suitable for drawing)

Bob Ross Wet-on-Wet Oils

General Info about Bob Ross Classes

Class teaches any age student the techniques and concepts developed by Bob Ross, the artist and host of the internationally known Joy of Painting program.  This program is often broadcast in the U.S. on public broadcasting stations (such as ThinkTV).  Students range from those who have never painted to growing artists and those who admire Bob Ross and his lifetime work to develop tools and methods to help anyone be able to paint using wet oils, even if they’ve never painted before.  Students choose a class format that best fits their current needs from several sessions shown below.

I normally will ask what you want to paint if you are taking an individual class.  To get ideas, visit the official Bob Ross website*, use Bob Ross books, or view my Bob Ross paintings at my website.  There are many Bob Ross paintings to choose from. If you don’t have a certain one in mind before class, I can choose one for you based on if you want to paint a landscape, seascape, or floral.  During your first class, you can look at the Bob Ross books I have and choose your next painting lesson.

*Bob Ross Website:  A list of books is at:    http://www.bobross.com/Supplies.cfm#Q2

Click once on the link for a book to view the scenes from that book.  Let me what book and scene.   (After clicking  link for book, I sometimes have to minimize the website to see the book images).

Make It – Take It    Bob Ross Class

Description: This is an excellent class for all beginning Bob Ross students, including those who have never painted or touched a brush.  Class teaches basic techniques of the Bob Ross paintings and a 9” x 12” canvas painting is completed in about one hour.  These are perfect sizes for the student creating their very first art work(s), painting a personal art collection, or giving gifts to friends and loved ones.  Many students do several of these before going on to larger size canvas.  There are many scenes to choose from such as landscapes (mountains, trees, meadows, water); seascapes (where water is the main part of the scene); and floral.

Recommendations: Students who have not used any type of paint medium before or have never painted should strongly consider scheduling Make It Take It class(es) to learn techniques. Tom may require a student take Make It Take It first based on student’s painting medium experience or instruction goals.

Student should wear clothing and use purses, bags, hats, etc. that can get paint on them (although this normally doesn’t happen).  Time to complete may be a little less or a little more depending on student’s painting experience, what is being painted, and goals for the class. The type of scape to be painted is determined at time of scheduling, or soon after.

Session Length: 1 hour

Cost: $30 covers 1 hour instruction fee and all materials including canvas and paint

Students do not receive discount for bringing own materials.

Provided: Tom provides all paint, easel, brushes, palettes for use during class.

3-Hour   Bob Ross Class

Landscape, Seascape, Floral

Description: Excellent class for students who are familiar with Bob Ross techniques or who are skilled or mastered in using acrylic or oil mediums.  Canvas paintings are typically on 16” x 20” or 18” x 24” canvas (as Tom determines appropriate).  Many students choose to do several of these, concentrating in one scene-type area of landscape, seascape, or floral before moving to different scene type.

Recommendations: Bob Ross beginning students who have not used any type of paint medium before or have never painted should strongly consider scheduling Make It Take It class(es) to learn techniques. Tom may require a student take Make It Take It first based on student’s painting medium experience or instruction goals.

A Note About Floral: Floral Bob Ross paints and techniques are different than those normally used for land and seascapes.  It is strongly recommended student be familiar with floral paintings in other paint mediums (oil, acrylic) or have taken a couple Make It Take It Bob Ross floral classes before scheduling a first floral 3-hour painting class.

Session Length: 2-4 hours  (completion time is dependent on student and is normally 3 hours)

Cost: $75 covers all materials including canvas  (16” x 20”   or 18”  x  24” as determined by Tom)

$65 if student brings all their own paints

Students who bring their own paints must discuss requirements in advance with Tom.

ONLY Bob Ross paint, gesso, etc. to be used. Paint colors determined by scape/scene.

Tom still provides canvas and brushes when students bring their own paint.

No discount given if other materials (besides paint) are brought to class by the student.

Students who do not bring required paint will pay $75 instead of $65

Provided: Tom provides canvas, paper towels, palettes, brushes, beater box, and easels for use during all classes.

Traditional Oils

Simple Objects – Traditional Oils Class

Description: A great starting place for beginning traditional oil students, including those who have never used paint as a medium.  Class teaches basic techniques of using traditional oils on canvas paper or a 9” x 12” canvas (as Tom and student determine appropriate when scheduling class).  The painting is of a simple object/still life or from a photo that student provides (or ask Tom to provide a prop or photo from his collection).  Due to the nature of oils, which take longer to dry, student choose objects/scenes that will be painted in monotone (such as black and white) or only three or four colors.  Students often do one or more of these to strengthen skills, using different props/scenes before going on to larger size canvases. Many students place their paintings on a wall at home and watch their progress!

Recommendations: Students who want to use traditional oils and have not used any type of paint medium before or have never painted should strongly consider scheduling Simple Objects – Traditional Oils to learn techniques. Tom may require a student take Simple Objects – Traditional Oils based on student’s painting medium experience or instruction goals.   Tom may also require first time painters accomplish their simple object in black and white or another monotone even though the object / scene may contain color.

Session Length: 1 to 2 hours

Cost: $30 covers 1 hour instruction fee and all materials including canvas paper or 9 x 12” canvas

Students do not receive discount for bringing own materials.

Provided: Tom provides all paint, easel, brushes, palettes for use during class.

3-Part   Traditional Oils Class

Description: For those who have become, or are becoming, skilled with traditional oils and have accomplished some works in this medium.  Uses knowledge of and experiences with traditional oil to create a piece of work with an array of textures and colors ranging from simple to moderate in complexity. Complexity is dependent on student’s background and experience.  Due to oil “dry time,” class is taught in 3 sessions of 1-2 hours each ranging from 3 to 10 days apart.  Paintings are typically on 16” x 20” or 18” x 24” canvas (as Tom determines appropriate).

Students who want to complete 3-Part Traditional Oils Class at a slower rate (such as five, 1-hour sessions)  should discuss with Tom and make arrangements when scheduling class.

Session Length: Three sessions of 1-2 hours each

Results in 5-7 class hours over several days time

Cost: $95 for instruction fee, all materials including canvas (16” x 20”  or 18”  x  24” as determined by Tom)

$85 if student brings all their own paints

Students who bring their own paints must discuss requirements in advance with Tom.

Paint colors determined by scape/scene.

Tom still provides canvas and brushes when students bring their own paint.

No discount given if other materials (besides paint) are brought to class by the student.

Students who do not bring required paint will pay $95 instead of $85

If completing in 5 sessions (about  1 hour each session) instead of 3:

$105 for instruction fee, all materials including canvas (16” x 20”  or 18”  x  24” as determined by Tom)

$  95 if student brings all their own paints

Provided: Tom provides canvas, paper towels, palettes, brushes, beater box, and easels

for use during all classes.

Wet  Oils

1 Hour – Wet Oils Class

Description: A great starting place for beginning wet oil students, including those who have never used paint as a medium.  Class teaches basic techniques of using wet oils on canvas paper or 9” x 12” canvas (as Tom and student determine appropriate when scheduling class).  The first paintings are normally of scenery which allows demonstration of various techniques using a range of brushes and tools.  Later, a still life allows expansion of knowledge and use of techniques.  Wet oils do not require dry time; however, instruction for brand new users may require some limitations in number of colors used until the techniques become more familiar.  Take a couple of these classes or as many as you like.

Recommendations: Three or more 1-Hour wet oil classes or Bob Ross Make It Take It classes are recommended for new wet oil students before going on to a 3-Hour Wet Oil.

Session Length: 1 hour  (approximate)

Cost: $30 covers 1 hour instruction fee and all materials including canvas paper or 9 x 12” canvas

Students do not receive discount for bringing own materials.

Provided: Tom provides all paint, easel, brushes, palettes for use during class.

Uses knowledge and experiences with wet oils to create land or water scenes or still lifes.   Paintings are typically on 16” x 20” or 18” x 24” canvas (as Tom determines appropriate).

Recommendations: Three or more 1-Hour wet oil classes or Bob Ross Make It Take It classes are recommended for new wet oil students before taking a 3-Hour Wet Oil class.  This allows  students to develop skill with wet oil concepts and techniques.

Session Length: 2-4 hours  (completion time is dependent on student and is normally 3 hours)

Paints used are the “tube” type.

Student should wear clothing and use purses, bags, hats, etc. that can get paint on them (although this normally doesn’t happen).  Each lesson’s completion time is discussed when student schedules class, or the next session in a series, and varies by student ability, what is being painted, and goals for the class.
