I took this photo several years ago while on vacation. It was spring, and driving down the Blue Ridge Parkway was a treat.

It was like driving through a 500-mile park.  I could not drive more than a mile without stopping to take a photo or paint a scene.

It was early morning when I took this photo.  I like this one because the mist made it seem like you where on top of the world.  The mist was all around me . . . I felt alone in the world and at peace.

The moonlight always fascinates me.  I will often go out at night just to look at the moon and I often take my camera with me.

In this painting I capture the interesting shadows of the fence line as the moonlight is cast upon the crusted snow.

It seems like the clouds are paper lanterns as the light glows from them.

Without the moon, there would be no sacred night.

Cricket Hollow

I did this painting at Mary Help of Christian Festival, Fairborn, Ohio,in 2004. This painting is of a creek almost frozen over in a deep hollow.   It is a black and white, except for the bird and a few tinges of blue.

While I was in the middle of painting this, a family member stopped at my booth and thought the painting was a little unusual and said “Have you lost your mind?  What place is that?”

I replied, “It’s just a painting from my mind.”

I took the painting home and hung it on the wall to dry.   Not even two weeks passed before a friend came by the house.  He stopped and looked and looked at the painting.  He said, “I can’t believe it, my wife and I just came back from a canoe trip and that painting looks just like that place.”   I was very surprised since this was just a painting from my mind and he purchased it on the spot.

It just goes to show one more time that as an artist you will sometimes be surprised that what some people think odd will be treasured by someone else.

Misty Blue Ridge Parkway

Misty Blue Ridge Parkway

Several years ago my family and I traveled the Blue Ridge Parkway.  We didn’t get to start right at the beginning but traveled the middle 300 miles or so of it.

Rain and mist was the weather of the day, but I still managed to get some great photos.

When we returned home, the first thing I did was accomplish a painting of the scene beside a road stop where we sat in the car and ate sandwiches while rain poured down.  Right after the rain, a mist arose from the ground as the sun started to warm the area.

Misty Blue Ridge Parkway is originally painted as a black and white traditional oil piece with blue and pink tints.

If you ever get the chance, travel the Blue Ridge Parkway.  You’ll need to take  your time though as the road twists and turns around the mountains and bad weather can close part or all the road.
