Boy Scouts of America – BSA

Accomplishing this painting brought back a lot of great memories.   When I was a young scout  (1960s and early 1970s) , I was often at Camp Birch.  It is just a few miles south of Springfield where I grew up.  I never imagined then that I would be asked to paint this place.

I went to summer camp here for a couple of years and camped in the park a few times year round.  When my son was in scouts, I got to come back with him.  The people that run the camp are terrific and truly have the Camp’s best interests in mind.  They try hard to make sure Camp Birch is maintained for generations of scouts to come.

This painting looks across the pond to the back of the dining hall.  When I was little, I got to camp out in the dining hall a couple of times . . . so lots of memories.

I give a special THANK YOU to all the scout masters and the volunteers and families and, of course, the scouts.    Everyone working together to help our young men grow . . . that is what makes scouting possible .

One winter morning on one of my regular hikes, I saw this Queen Ann Lace holding this little bit of snow.   I was amazed at how the snow flakes had collected in the top in this unique fashion.   It’s hard to see it from the photo, but the snow flakes were so light and full of air.

Tree Corridor - Great Circle Earthworks (June 2007)

I took this photo in Heath, Ohio, which is close to Newark in June 2007.  Heath and Newark are about an hour east of Columbus.

This place is called the Great Circle Earthworks and the mounds were built by the Hopewell culture.  Great Circle Earthworks is the new name for this memorial which was previously called Mound Builders State Memorial.

At the time I took this photo, my youngest son was graduating eighth grade on an online school.  The school had the graduation at the Midland Theater in Newark, Ohio, which is a historic building.   (This was a central location for families to travel to).   It was a great weekend to attend the graduation and do some sightseeing too.

Like many people, I enjoy learning history.  I could hardly wait for the moment I could stop by this place and take in these long earthen mounds with huge flat grassy plains.   From a photographer’s eye, I really like contrasts in this photo with the varying lights and darks, and how the landscape dramatically changes as the eye scans the area.
