Spring Robin

This watercolor painting was inspired by the Locust tree.

I like how the Locust’s white blossoms appear in springtime.

Some years the blossoms only last a short time–other years they seem to last much longer.

The white blossoms against the ever changing colors of the other trees is fascinating.

Painting Hint for Watercolor:

This watercolor painting uses a lot of different techniques.  Masking fluid keeps the whites “white”.   A “wash” is used for the sky and field.   A dry brush (no water) and very little paint was used to create the fence.

Nesting Robins

In 2005 I  used watercolors to create a series of birds.

This is one of the pieces from that series.

Beginner’s Hint:  This hint is for those who want to learn how to use water colors but haven’t yet started or have little experience.

First, take some time to play with the colors.

I suggest taping a piece of good quality water color paper to a smooth board.  This will allow you to have some flexibility for this exercise.

Put a little water on the paper, then add the color.  Tilt the paper different ways and angles and see how the color runs.  Add a couple other colors with a various amounts of water.  As long as you have good quality water color paper, you should be able to apply water without the paper tearing or falling apart.   Use brushes, sponges, palette knifes to try different things.

Once you get used to the colors, amount of water, tools, and techniques you like, think about how you can apply this to a painting.

Remember to let the watercolors and paper dry at various layers to get the effect you want.
