Accomplishing this painting brought back a lot of great memories. When I was a young scout (1960s and early 1970s) , I was often at Camp Birch. It is just a few miles south of Springfield where I grew up. I never imagined then that I would be asked to paint this place.

I went to summer camp here for a couple of years and camped in the park a few times year round. When my son was in scouts, I got to come back with him. The people that run the camp are terrific and truly have the Camp’s best interests in mind. They try hard to make sure Camp Birch is maintained for generations of scouts to come.

This painting looks across the pond to the back of the dining hall. When I was little, I got to camp out in the dining hall a couple of times . . . so lots of memories.

I give a special THANK YOU to all the scout masters and the volunteers and families and, of course, the scouts. Everyone working together to help our young men grow . . . that is what makes scouting possible .

A few years ago my wife, Rachel, and I combined our work: a print of my original traditional oil painting and her poem. We presented each cub scout at our son’s crossing over ceremony a framed Crossover, and she read the poem to about 150 attendees, making the occasion even more momentous for every listening ear. We are HONORED to share this tribute. Since then the tribute has been one of our most sought after combined works.

Make your ceremony special, too, by having a special person in your pack or troop, read the poem at your Crossover Ceremony (all you need to do is state that Rachel Hock is the author-just don’t make copies).

Cat Barn, Cat Cow Shed, Cat Milking Parlor

I was in the cow shed and I noticed this cat had a rough coat and was wet. I was curious and watched where she went. It turned out the cow was licking her, and she seemed to like it because she kept going back.

This was taken at a dairy close to my home. They sell some of the best milk, cheese, and ice cream. They also serve meals, have putt putt, batting cages, hay rides and more for family fun. A great place to go! Young’s Jersey Dairy on Route 68, between Springfield and Yellow Springs, Ohio.

Queen Ann Lace in Snow

One winter morning on one of my regular hikes, I saw this Queen Ann Lace holding this little bit of snow. I was amazed at how the snow flakes had collected in the top in this unique fashion. It’s hard to see it from the photo, but the snow flakes were so light and full of air.

All in Ohio, all in the same area.

All these parks are connected in a beautiful place that I never grow tired of visiting. So much to photograph and paint.

I hope you have the chance to go and see this place. This photo is of the “Yellow Springs”. The red color of the water comes from the iron. Sometimes the kids will paint their faces with the iron, and a lot of locals profess this water is good mineral water to drink.

Mound Builders Photo

Tree Corridor - Great Circle Earthworks (June 2007)

I took this photo in Heath, Ohio, which is close to Newark in June 2007. Heath and Newark are about an hour east of Columbus.

This place is called the Great Circle Earthworks and the mounds were built by the Hopewell culture. Great Circle Earthworks is the new name for this memorial which was previously called Mound Builders State Memorial.

At the time I took this photo, my youngest son was graduating eighth grade on an online school. The school had the graduation at the Midland Theater in Newark, Ohio, which is a historic building. (This was a central location for families to travel to). It was a great weekend to attend the graduation and do some sightseeing too.

Like many people, I enjoy learning history. I could hardly wait for the moment I could stop by this place and take in these long earthen mounds with huge flat grassy plains. From a photographer’s eye, I really like contrasts in this photo with the varying lights and darks, and how the landscape dramatically changes as the eye scans the area.

This is a painting of a paddle wheeler and a King Fisher that I finished in the early 1990s.

The old steam engines are fascinating–it’s something how someone could figure how to turn steam into power.

There are a pair of Kingfishers close to my house, and it’s interesting to watch them fly and chase each other around.

Sleddin' Time

This is one of my watercolor illustrations from my children’s book called Grandma’s Smile. The story is about my grandmother who takes her dog and my boys sled ridding. It is a true story with a little imaginative flair at the end.

Winter Cabin

This painting is dedicated to my friend, Ed, who is passed away.

Every year in January, he would go cross country skiing up north for 2 weeks.

I always remember him coming back after vacation and he’d look so relaxed and at peace.

One time he went, around noon a blizzard blew in, and he was skiing on a frozen lake pulling a sled. It was tough going and getting late and he saw a faint outline of a cabin which is one of the cabins provided by the local community. It was stocked with firewood and a few provisions.

He made it to the cabin just as the sun was setting, opened the door, and skied right in. It was dark inside, and he his lantern. Someone had already laid a fire in the stove. With a match from a jar above the stove he lit fire in stove. It felt great to be inside and not have to set up a tent. The next morning the blizzard was gone and the morning sun was beautiful.

My friend, Ed, knew that God was watching over him, and he was thankful for that little cabin of warmth and shelter.

Horses, Carriage Hill Farm, Photo

Horses of Carriage Hill Farm (2009)

It was the first of spring and I was taking photos at Carriage Hill Farm (Dayton Ohio). I stopped to take some photos of these horses.

I think they enjoyed getting their picture taken as much as I enjoyed taking their picture.

This brought back a memory of my great grandfather. He would say to me, “do not point your ears back at me.” Which means do not get upset.

I picked this photo because of the angles of the horses, the shadows, and the contrast of the light and dark horses.
