Accomplishing this painting brought back a lot of great memories.   When I was a young scout  (1960s and early 1970s) , I was often at Camp Birch.  It is just a few miles south of Springfield where I grew up.  I never imagined then that I would be asked to paint this place.

I went to summer camp here for a couple of years and camped in the park a few times year round.  When my son was in scouts, I got to come back with him.  The people that run the camp are terrific and truly have the Camp’s best interests in mind.  They try hard to make sure Camp Birch is maintained for generations of scouts to come.

This painting looks across the pond to the back of the dining hall.  When I was little, I got to camp out in the dining hall a couple of times . . . so lots of memories.

I give a special THANK YOU to all the scout masters and the volunteers and families and, of course, the scouts.    Everyone working together to help our young men grow . . . that is what makes scouting possible .

Shell Gas Station 1950

Nostalgia.

This was a commission I accomplished in traditional oil for a friend.  His business today is in this old gas station in Beavercreek, Ohio.

This was done from a 3″ x3″ black and white photo taken in 1950.  The building design has evolved, and surrounding area has developed from a rural setting to a semi-urban setting.  The building that was once a a gas station no longer looks this today.

This is Angel.  She is a beautiful Great Pyrenees.

Angel’s family asked me to paint her because she was getting old and is ill and they don’t expect her to live much longer.

I am honored to help the family remember their good times together.

This is a commission I was asked to do in Fall 2009.

I had completed the oil painting commission of Cemetery Road Bridge for a lady.  She really liked it and asked me to do a commission of her home.

Soon I was taking the photograph.  I used this photo to do my rendition of her home–this painting.

The homeowners did a great job of choosing the colors of this home.

To me this painting just feels like home.

Mother's Garden

I did this water color of “Mother’s Garden” in 2005 as a commission.

The commission was from a daughter to paint her mother’s yard because her mother was going to live in a retirement home.  The mother had worked many years in her yard and loved her goldfish pond.  It was very hard for her to leave.  The daughter gave this painting to her mother as a gift.

I did this painting from an aerial view to capture the essence of the entire yard.  This painting, like all my commissions, also has special memories for me.  I visited this place and the mother a few times and could feel just how special it was for both the mother, her daughter, and the entire family.

Cemetery Road Bridge - Yellow Springs Ohio

This bridge is Cemetery Road Bridge in YellowSprings, Ohio.  It was moved from Cemetery Road to Grinnel Road and is used just for foot traffic today.

This painting was done as a commission. The original is in a private collection.

This commission was a joy to do.  When I am given a commission to do, for me, it is like getting a gift on Christmas day and then being able to give the gift back.

Cox Arboretum - Reflections

This is one of my first traditional oil paintings of the Reflections Pool at Cox Arboretum in Dayton Ohio.

The original of this painting was donated to Channel 16, Public Broadcasting Station (PBS), “Think TV”  (Dayton) for their Great TV Auction to support programming a couple years ago.

Cox Arboretum is one of attractions I frequently visit in my local area.  I get great photos of the pool, butterflies (in the butterfly house), and general garden settings.

I painted this from a photograph for a wife who gave this “memory” to her husband as a gift.
